In late 2023, we connected with the ideal sewing program partner at City Dream Centre Surrey. The staff and volunteers at CDCS embody love, compassion, and genuine kindness. The first ‘Sew It’ class began in April 2024, and as we approach its first anniversary, we are amazed at how much the program has grown. City Dream Centre Surrey offers many incredible programs that are making a profound impact on the lives of those in Surrey.”
Here is the ‘Sew it’ programs Dec – Feb report.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am pleased to share an update on the Sewing Club’s progress over the past quarter. Your generous support has made it possible for us to continue providing a meaningful and impactful program for the ladies in recovery.
Winter Session Overview
From January through February, we successfully completed another set of sewing classes. This winter, we introduced a two-tiered system:
• Beginner Class (1.0) – Focused on foundational skills, including an introduction to the sewing machine and sewing process. Participants completed three projects:
• A pillowcase
• A double-sided cosmetic bag with pockets and a zipper
• A hairband
The projects were selected to progressively build confidence and ability. We tailored the pace to the students’ skills and ensured a one-on-one facilitator-to-student ratio, which greatly enhanced their learning experience.
• Advanced Class (2.0) – Continued skill development for returning students. This term, we introduced pattern-making and fabric cutting, allowing participants to expand their understanding of sewing beyond machine operation. The group responded with enthusiasm. They also completed an apron and a bag projects.
Impact on Participants
The sewing classes have proven to be a valuable part of the recovery process. Comparing the first and last sessions, we have seen remarkable improvements in both skills and personal confidence. The hands-on, supportive environment helps participants develop patience, focus, and resilience—key elements in their recovery journey.
Volunteer Support & Growth
This quarter, we increased our number of volunteer facilitators, which ensured:
• Individualized support for each student
• Consistency in instruction, even when not all facilitators were available
• A strong and encouraging learning environment
Gratitude for Donated Sewing Machine
We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you for the donation of a sewing machine to the recovery home. The ladies have shared with us how much they appreciate having access to it outside of class time. Many of them have been using it to practice and work on their own projects, which has further strengthened their skills and confidence. This opportunity to continue sewing beyond the classroom is a significant step in their personal growth and healing journey.
Looking Ahead
With the success of the two-class system, we will continue offering separate beginner (1.0) and advanced (2.0) classes when we resume at the end of March. We anticipate some returning students, so we will adjust the curriculum and introduce new projects to ensure continuous skill development.
A Heartfelt Thank You
Your ongoing support has been instrumental in making this program a success. The impact on these women’s lives is profound, and we are deeply grateful for your partnership in their journey of healing and transformation.
With gratitude,
City Dream Centre
